南红玛瑙是因其产地而得名的，具体产地主要是云南，其次是甘肃和四川。南红很早前就被人们开采利用了，玛瑙的古称“赤玉”就应包括南红玛瑙。
南红玛瑙，常见的颜色为甘肃的柿子红，大红， 粉，也有不常见的紫红，以及这些颜色的透明或半透明的变化色，包括接近透明的无色，都大致的定义为南红的颜色范围。颜色质感为胶质，除柿子红、大红以外的颜色都是由较细小的点状物构成。这种点状结构，在放大镜和相机微距下较为明显。而其白色的纹路多少则看情况，有像丝带一样的纹理也有白红相间一半一半。南红除了白色纹路及透明、半透明外有时会夹杂一些伴生矿，多为白色或无色水晶。
　　南红玛瑙颜色鲜艳，质地细腻。在清乾隆年间，柿子红色南红玛瑙就开采绝迹了，传下来的南红玛瑙大多是汉到明，曾见过一高古粉色南红管。开采出的南红矿绝大多数为粉色，偶有大红色，但数量较少。
　　南红玛瑙非常温润、油性，实际上已近似于和田籽料红玉，尽管我们基本看不到和田红玉。南红玛瑙的“油润”与普通玛瑙的“滑润”有明显的区别。特别是一种稀有的冰纹南红玛瑙非常美丽动人。
2 历史发展
　　南红玛瑙的应用历史悠久，在出土的战国贵族墓葬中已经有南红玛瑙的串饰了，如云南博物馆馆藏有古滇国时期的出土南红饰品，北京故宫博物院馆藏的清代南红玛瑙凤首杯更是精美，是研究南红玛瑙制品、南红玛瑙雕刻件等，宫廷碾玉的实物资料，具有非常重要的历史、艺术价值，被定为地区一级文物。从这些馆藏作品可以看出，历朝历代对南红都非常重视，同时也是很**的珍贵材料。
